VINCI Airports, which officially took over the operations of Salvador Bahia airport on January 2nd, held on April 19 a foundation stone ceremony to mark the beginning of the first phase of renovation and expansion works at the airport. The event gathered top regional and airport authorities, including Bahia’s Governor Rui Costa, Salvador’s Mayor ACM Neto and José Ricardo Botelho, President of the National Civil Agency. VINCI Airports’ President Nicolas Notebaert and Salvador Bahia Airport’s CEO Julio Ribas hosted the ceremony.
The first phase of works will allow passengers and airlines to see positive changes in a relatively short time. Those involve major works of expansion and compliance of the airside infrastructures, construction of a new boarding lounge (+20,000 sqm) and refurbishment of the existing terminal. Works, allowing better flows and new experiences for all the passengers, include a new commercial area highlighting Salvador’s identity, modernization of toilets and changing rooms, improvements in airport signage, new air conditioning and ventilation systems, additional elevators and escalators and free high-speed wifi installation.
They will be conducted by a local consortium formed by Teixeira Duarte Engenharia e Construções S.A, Alves Ribeiro S.A do Brasil and Actemium (subsidiary of VINCI Énergies), Brazilian construction companies with extensive experience in infrastructure projects, including at Lisbon airport which is also managed by VINCI Airports. During the peak period, the worksite will employ around 800 workers. Total investment for this first phase of works will add up to around 600 million BRL.
“Our main commitment is to turn Salvador Bahia airport into a world-class gateway”, said Nicolas Notebaert, President of VINCI Airports. “In the future, we believe it will be a completely different airport, in every respect, from the look of the terminal, to the comfort of travelers, the quality of service, airline traffic and commercial activities. We are eager to work together with local authorities and trade organizations to make that happen”, he added. “VINCI Airports has global experience in redesigning the airport experience for passengers and fostering the traffic. We will combine our expertise with the experience of our strong local team to achieve our objectives”, he concluded.
